Frequently Asked Questions
Lunch
We will be eating lunch each day in the school cafeteria at 1:10-1:40. Your child may either bring a lunch from home or purchase lunch from the cafeteria. Breakfast is also available each morning in the cafeteria from 8:45-9:15am. The cost of lunch is $2.75. We recommend that you PREPAY for lunch (www.mylunchmoney.com) rather than sending in money daily with your child.
To allow time for students to learn lunch routines, we ask that parents wait to begin eating lunch with their child until September. Parents should sign in at the front office & then meet their child in the cafeteria.
Snack
Our classroom participates in community snack. We ask that all families choose one day per month to sign up to bring in snack for the whole class (21 students). Sign-ups will be emailed to parents and posted on the class website. We encourage families to bring in healthy food choices that may include fruits & veggies, fruit snacks, pretzels, goldfish, crackers, etc. If you do not wish to participate in community snack, you will need to send a snack in with your child each day.
Morning Arrival
Children are allowed to enter the classroom no earlier than 8:45am. After the first week of school, students are encouraged to come into the school and classroom alone. We understand this is sometimes hard for parents; however, it fosters responsibility and independence in the children and creates a positive start to the day! J Staff will be monitoring the hallway for safety & to assist your child to the classroom if needed.
Transportation
It is very important that we know how your child is getting home from school each day. It is also critical that your child learn his or her mode of transportation.
If there is any change in transportation, please send in a note or call the school. We must know this change prior to dismissal. A verbal message from the child is not enough. If there is no communication from the parent, your child will be sent home by his or her regular transportation.
Students are not allowed to ride a bus other than the one assigned to your address and may not get off at any other stop. If a child is going home with a friend, they will have to bring a note and ride car pool. This is a school policy.
Extra Clothes
Kindergarteners are very unpredictable. We ask that you send in a complete change of clothes (pants/shorts, shirt, underwear and socks) in the event of an accident. Please put the clothes in a large Ziploc bag with your child’s name on it. It will be kept in cubbies throughout the year. Some of your kindergarteners may never have an accident but they are handy to have in case of a large spill or a slip in the mud. We will send these bags home as the weather changes and will ask that you send in a new weather appropriate change of clothes.
Specials
We have specials every day at 10:20. These specials include Technology, Media, P.E., Music, and Art. Please be sure to send your child to school in tennis shoes on Wednesdays when we have P.E.
Absences & Tardy Bell
If your child is absent from school, you must send a note to the teacher or call the school to state the reason for the absence. If a child leaves school before 12:30, it is considered an absence. Excused absences are illness, death in the family, and religious holidays. All other absences, even if accompanied by a note, will be unexcused. The tardy bell rings at 9:15am. If your child arrives after 9:15am, he or she must go to the office to receive a tardy slip before coming into the classroom.
Medication
If your child is taking any medication (prescription or non-prescription) that must be administered at school, the parent must fill out a form to be signed by the doctor. The medication will be kept in the front office. The parent must drop the medication off at the office. PLEASE do not send medication to school in your child’s backpack!
Daily Folders
CES provides each student with a daily folder. Please check your child’s folder each night. Make sure your child returns the folder to school each day. We do not check each child’s book bag, so please make sure any notes that need to be seen by an adult are put in daily folders.
Homework
Homework will begin in second quarter. As per WCPSS policy, homework for Kindergarten should not exceed a maximum of 20 minutes J
Birthdays
If you would like to bring in a small treat for the class to celebrate your child’s birthday, please send me an email or a note in your child’s folder. As per WCPSS policy, all treats must be store bought. We will celebrate birthdays during our regularly scheduled snack time.
Volunteers
If you think you might want to volunteer in the future, please visit the media center as soon as possible to register. There is a background check that takes approximately two weeks to be completed. All volunteers must be approved prior to participating in school events such as field trips. Our class also uses volunteers to be “mystery readers” as well as helpers during literacy centers.
